I go to many thrift stores and Inova Fair Oaks is by far one of my favourites. The store is really well organised and it’s spread out enough to not feel overwhelming or cramped.

The craft area is typically full of good yarn, sewing patterns, and fabric. I’ve found good backpacks, books, and shoes here numerous times. The staff here are really welcoming and friendly, often will spark conversations and ask about you and the items you got without being invasive. I do find it confusing how the items are rung up using mental math (say, if you bought 3 items priced at $3 each the cashier will put $9 into the register without scanning anything) and can see how there would be issues. As many others have mentioned the prices have gotten higher, but I noticed it is mostly the clothes, which I don’t shop much here for.

Otherwise, I usually come out of the store with both arms full of unique finds and will continue to do so until I have no more space for them.

Great to learn that the hospital bought both a MRI and a breast imaging machine with the proceeds from this shop! So keep shopping!

I hopped on a local bus (which drops off at the shop’s parking lot) and explored here and the neighbor Pho restaurant. Both were exceptional. Kind hearted and hardworking hospital volunteers bring the same dedicated effort to this charity shop/thrift store.

Great place with a very social and fun shopping atmosphere. I got a much needed practical and very elegant olive green rain anorak ($40)and an unusual pleated front jean jacket ($12)-like new and gently worn items. Beautiful Virginia made pottery, golf clubs, gorgeous evening gowns (were $15.) Donations accepted with a smile!

The store itself is clean and well-organized. However, the prices seem a bit ridiculous. I understand the want to make money; however, people don't seem to realize that's one of the main appeals of thrifting. Places like these that have their clothes sorted onto “designer brands” racks take all the intrigue out of thrifting. I browsed for about 5 minutes before cutting my losses and heading to the nearest Goodwill. I'm not saying prices need to be dirt cheap, but if I wanted to pay $28 for an old, stretched-out NorthFace T-shirt, I would just go to the outlet mall. Not to mention the two Lego sets marked $95 each that were sitting in the toy section when I went. I was not impressed by the selection of items to choose from either, but it's always possible that I just went on a bad day.

This is from the perspective of donating. I did a massive closet purge and had 197 items to donate. I chose INOVA because I know their angle is to be kind of like a boutique. My stuff was mostly Anthropologie, J. Crew, and Madewell, so I thought it would be a good fit for their target customer. The bottom line is that I showed up during donation hours, rang the bell, and was met by a woman who would barely give me the time of day. I said hello. She said nothing. She took two of my bags while barely acknowledging me. She wasn’t busy. Just unfriendly. When I saw two elderly women walk up and complete donations and also not be acknowledged, I decided to take my remaining donations elsewhere. I asked for a receipt, and the woman working there said “For what?”. I told her it was for the two bags I just donated. She handed it to me without even looking at me, and I left. If you’re going to sell my donated items for $10-25 each, you can at least say hello.

Prices have become astronomical at this location. Items that used to cost $3 are now $8-$15. Anything even remotely vintage gets a ridiculous price hike. I used to love coming to this store for a good deal, but this is extortion. Only posting this review with the hope that they reevaluate what makes them a “thrift” store and begin pricing more fairly. Very disappointed!!
